A number of club riders have been involved in racing over the last few weeks as the track cycling season reaches its conclusion and the circuit and road racing season starts to come out of hibernation.
Three of the youth riders have been actively involved in the annual Icebreaker series at Newport velodrome, which provided riders with a chance to compete across a range of track events in an endurance based omnium. Each round includes scratch, elimination and points races. The first icebreaker round for 2019 took place on the 26th January 2019 and rider of the day was Max Hinds who made a superb start to the year finishing in 1st place in the Youth C category out of 21 entrants on the day. In the Youth B girls category Posie Forrester had a good ride picking up 19th place. Unfortunately Aimee Lane suffered a heavy crash in her event following a large pile up and it was pleasing to see her make an early return to racing at the following weeks circuit racing at Stourport.
A number of club members have been involved in the early season Mamil circuit race series at Stourport sports club in what is always challenging early season racing due to a combination of the weather and some very competitive fields. Charlie Genner has been a particular highlight having only just made the step up into combined junior/adult racing finishing in 22nd place in his first category 3/4 race on the 26th January with Jono Goulding finishing just behind in 24th place. Charlie then rode to a superb 9th place on the 2nd February picking up his first full BC point in the process with Aimee Lane also picking up points finishing second in the U16 girls race. Samuel Jones also had an excellent ride in the E/1/2/3 category picking up more early season points with an 8th place finish .
Charlie was the only rider involved in the last round of the Mamil’s the 9th February round in extremely challenging and windy conditions, which blew the races to pieces, but still managed to pick up a strong 17th place finish.
Away from Stourport 3 of the club riders took part in the Sulis Scorpions circuit race series at Odd Down near Bath on the 9th February. Harry Lane had a great ride in the U10 boys category finishing in 6th place out of 19 starters. In the U12 boys Max Hinds picked up another early season podium finishing in 2nd place and Aimee Lane also made a trip to the podium finishing in 3rd place.
