As April breaks cover we find ourselves with longer evenings and warmer days. But being England neither can be guaranteed. What we do have, however, is a panoply of local bumps that can test your climbing chops without committing to huge miles.
This route features some of those bumps and the inevitable upside of the downhills once completed.
Leaving SSC in a Northeasterly manner via Kidderminster it’s a short run to the warmup exercise on Sugar Loaf Lane. A steady climb brings us next to the excellent Hagley Wood Lane and its fine 14% as we traverse the Clent ridge. A descent into Rubery gives us the opportunity to gather our thoughts before attacking Beacon Lane with its not insurmountable 15% grade. From there it IS downhill to the cafe at Barnt Green.
The return leg loops around Redditch and quiet lanes back via Bromsgrove and home. You’ll have earned that.
